Kenyan climate-tech startup SunCulture , founded in 2013 by Samir Ibrahim (CEO) and Charlie Nichols, has raised USD 5 M from WaterEquity, a global asset manager focused on water and sanitation. It marks the first investment from WaterEquity’s new Water & Climate Resilience Fund and follows SunCulture’s USD 4 M raise earlier this year. SunCulture offers solar-powered irrigation pumps, providing smallholder farmers with a sustainable and affordable alternative to diesel or manual systems. Over 90% of its customers also use the pumps for daily water needs like drinking, cooking, and cleaning. This addresses a critical infrastructure gap in rural Africa, where most households lack on-site water access. The company uses a “pay-as-you-grow” financing model, enabling farmers to pay in instalments, and has sold over 45,000 units to date. With the fresh capital, SunCulture plans to expand beyond Kenya into Uganda, Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, Zambia, and Togo, scaling its manufacturing, distribution, and financing operations.
